Monica Stokely passed away on Monday October 25, 2007 in Ferndale, WA. She left behind many loving family and friends. A memorial service was held Saturday November 10th, 2007 by the St. Johns River in Switzerland, FL. These pages will provide links to some of her causes, hobbies, pictures, and more.
Updates
- 2026: Three Florida State University International Affairs students received study abroad scholarships from the Monica Stokely Memorial Endowment Fund for the 2026-2027 academic year.
- 2025: A Monica Stokely Memorial Graduate Endowed Fellowship in Wildlife Ecology was established at the University of Florida, extending Monica's memory to graduate research. Its first award was a single $10,000 grant. Seven students also received study abroad scholarships at Florida State University this year, the FSU fund's largest year so far.
- April 14, 2023: The University of Florida published "Honoring a Sister's Love of Wildlife Ecology", a profile of Monica and the scholarship endowed in her memory.
- 2021-2025: Forty-one more scholarships were awarded over these five years, bringing the total to ninety-seven since the first awards in 2010. Eleven students were funded in 2023, the scholarship's largest year so far.
- 2010-2020: Fifty-six scholarships were awarded over these eleven years from Monica's memorial endowed scholarship to study natural resources and wildlife conservation at the University of Florida, growing from three awards of $750 in 2010 to seven a year by 2020.
- 2014-2024: Eleven students received study abroad scholarships from the Monica Stokely Memorial Endowment Fund at Florida State University, where Monica spent her freshman year. The fund awarded its first scholarship in 2014.
- February 24, 2011: Notes from the Florida Senate budget subcommittee meeting show that the UF Monica Christina Stokely Memorial Scholarship Fund was approved for $50,000 matching funds on October 27, 2009
- September 8, 2009: A page about the Monica Christina Stokely Memorial Scholarship Fund is now up on the University of Florida web site with information about this scholarship and Monica's life and quotes from her journal.
- May 25, 2009: Monica's Scholarship at the University of Florida is fully funded. Additional details will be available soon. Thanks to everyone that helped fund this endowment in Monica's memory.
- December 28, 2008: A few additional pictures have been added of Monica growing up, and information about her time at Florida Wildlife Care have been added. Her scholarship is nearly fully funded.
- March 16, 2008: A memorial article about Monica was published in the January-February 2008 Earth First! Journal.
- March 7, 2008: After just four months we are halfway to our fundraising goal of endowing a memorial scholarship for Monica. We extend our warmest and most sincere thanks to everyone that has contributed so far. We've been really touched by the number of contributions.
- January 27, 2008: Some of Monica's journal writings have been posted describing some of her goals and travels.
- January 3, 2008: More pictures have been posted. There are now 7 albums with 93 pictures of Monica.
